Hello, my name is Cheycon Spell. I am a photographer based in Utah. I have lived here all my life. I started photography in 2010. It was then that I was first able to afford a DSLR camera. It was a base model with a kit lens. I was so excited I wanted to go out and take photos like the ones you see in National Geographic. Yet, I was very disappointed in how the photos turned out. My mistake was thinking that the camera got those amazing shots. It was knowledge and skill, both I was lacking in. So I imparted on a journey of learning and experimenting. Years later I’m still learning. It also led me down a path of backpacking to locations to get these photos. I like the work it took to get the photo. The hours of hiking to get to camp, then hiking more to get to a location to get that shot that few people have been too.
Most bios you read about depict every photo with words you need a dictionary to understand, or you feel like this photo is the next new Apple product that the photo came from a land of magic and fairy tales. In reality though most of these photos have real stories behind them, like having so many mosquito bites trying to get the photo that I had little blood left. Watching what would look like a dull sky blow up in color after hiking all day and in the rain to get the photo. Waking up to mice in a slot canyon trying you get into your food bag with frogs singing in the canyon, or simply waiting hours in one location to get the photo that you see.
Not to get philosophical but my hope is that there is one photo that people connect with. That they can’t stop looking at. That they would never get sick of looking at. I appreciate you taking the time to look at my photos.
